A promising player from the youth team of the English soccer team Grimsby Town died at the age of 16 after the car he was traveling in crashed into a channel. The club described his death as a “hartling loss.”
“Cameron Walsh was an integral part of the GTFC academy,” the club said in a statement on its website.
“His passion for the game, together with his undeniable talent, made him a very beloved figure among teammates, coaches and the whole Grimsby Town family.”
“Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they navigate through the pain and sorrow that comes with such a tragedy.”
Lincolnshire police told CNN that they do not make public the names of those involved in fatal collisions, but local and national media named those involved as Cameron and the father of the 16-year-old, Dave Walsh.
The amateur soccer club Cleethorpes Town, where Cameron and Dave played, paid tribute to the deceased.
Cleethorpes described Dave, a former player and youth coach, as a “wonderful person” who spent “many, many happy moments” leading his son’s team.
In 2017, Cameron was the mascot of Cleethorpes Town in the FA Vase final against South Shields at Wembley Stadium, and the club said that it will be “forever a big part of our history.”
Police reported in a statement that two people were declared dead at the scene of the accident on Saturday after the car they were traveling in went off the road and was submerged in the water at Tetney Lock, in Lincolnshire, east of England.
“Now we appeal to anyone who may have information to present it,” says a police statement.
“At this time it is not believed that there were other vehicles involved, but we keep an open mind as the investigation progresses.”
Local ambulances and fire and rescue teams also went to the scene, according to the police.
Grimsby Town, which belongs to the fourth division of English football, reported that it will pay tribute to Cameron and his father in the club’s next home game, on Saturday, January 13.
